Why Discord wont open and how to fix it [SOLVED]
Discord is for communication purposes, a VoIP program that’s been built and is used primarily for gamers. Discord includes a Windows program available for Windows users (despite using an internet version reachable from browsers). Often the Windows Discord app won’t open on PC for users. Nothing will occur if you double click on the .exe icon file. For many users, only a desktop appears on the display and nothing else. A good deal of users attempt to start the program after a reinstall or a reboot but even that does not appear to address the problem.
We do not know for certain what’s causing the problem but what we do know is the Discord program works. Start the task manager and you may find the discord.exe from the running procedures. This mean, we are aware that the Discord works but it does not appear on the monitor. For those that are currently viewing the screen, it may be due to Discord and it is stuck at the login procedure. As it cannot log in the discord program does not display anything.
Kill discourse.exe using Task Manager
As stated previously, the reason that discord program is not currently working is because it has not started. The program does start but it is working only in the background. Finding the said process, ending it and then restarting the program could solve the issue.
Follow the steps to end the discord.exe process running in the background. Then restart discord.exe.
- Press Windows key + X, and click Task Manager
- Select the Processes tab
- Scroll through the list of running processes and locate the discord.exe.
- Select the discord.exe and click End Task
There could also be multiple instances/processes of discord.exe. In that case, kill all of these processes.
End the task using CMD
One of the alternative ways to shut down discord.exe processes, is to use the mighty command line.
- Open the Run prompt by pressing Win Key + R
- Type ‘cmd’ and press Enter, this will open the command prompt
- Run following command: taskkill /F /IM discord.exe
Log In to Web Version
This session/cookies might sometime cause the issue too. Plenty of users have solved the issue by registering from the web version and then attempting the Windows program version. In fact, nearly all of the users did not even have to log in to the web edition of Discord. The Discord app issue resolved once the discord internet version opened.
Open the Discord app on the desktop. When it displays the gray display up or does not start, run the web edition of Discord and register it. This will probably reset the accounts and it should begin running.
Delete discord’s AppData
In the event the methods did not work, it’s time to uninstall and reinstall the discord app. However, just restarting and restarting the program does not appear to address the matter. For a lot of users, then deleting the contents of this AppData and uninstalling the program seemed to get the job done. The matter was solved by the reinstalling of Discord app completely once the AppData contents have been erased.
- Open the Run prompt by pressing Win Key + R
- Type appwiz.cpl and press Enter
- Search for the Discord app. Click the Discord app and Confirm any further prompts. If you a message that Discord can’t be uninstalled because it already is running then kill the discord’s processes from Task Manager. Uninstall the app.

- Locate the Discord folder Delete it.
- Now reboot your PC and then reinstall the Discord app.
